Home Depot Digital Transformation - Spreadsheet

Home Depot, the iconic American home improvement retailer, faced a growing challenge: managing in-store signage and point-of-sale (POP) materials for the hundreds of vendors had become a logistical nightmare.

The Problem: Signs, Signs, Everywhere

Home Depot Project Dashboard

Home Depot relied on a spreadsheet-based process, patched together from manual, paper-driven workflows. This system was cracking under the weight of complexity. A team of coordinators had to manually input job requests from hundreds of vendors into a shared sheet, struggling to manage the ever-expanding network of stores, vendors, and signage updates.

Errors were frequent—mistakes made during data entry or communication breakdowns meant that jobs were sent to print incorrectly, leading to costly re-dos, delays, and frustration across the board.

Why Spreadsheets Fall Short

Managing display materials for hundreds of stores and thousands of vendors requires precision. But spreadsheets aren’t built for complexity or collaboration.

  • Details got lost: Job specifics were difficult to capture or share effectively.
  • Version control issues: Team members relied on multiple tabs and columns that could quickly get out of sync.
  • Process bottlenecks: Critical tasks depended on manual updates, which slowed communication and increased room for error.

Shared Online Sheets Weren’t Enough

KPDI worked closely with the stakeholders managing the old system to define every requirement, dependency, and field. From the start, we developed a comprehensive test plan to guide development and automated testing workflows to ensure consistent, error-free outputs. This approach allowed Home Depot to validate results efficiently throughout the build process.

KPDI’s Feature-Rich Solution

KPDI Digital stepped in to reimagine Home Depot’s process. We transformed their multi-tabbed, error-prone spreadsheet into a custom task management app, purpose-built to meet the retailer’s needs.

This intuitive platform offers:

  • Role-based permissions: Different users—internal teams, vendors, and partners—get access to only what they need, ensuring accuracy and security.
  • Dynamic fields: Relevant fields only appear when certain data is entered, streamlining the user experience.
  • Export capabilities: Jobs can be seamlessly exported to other platforms or systems.

Test-Driven Development: Precision from Start to Finish

The Result: A Seamless, Scalable Solution

The outcome? A streamlined, intuitive app that meets the needs of Home Depot, its vendors, and print partners. Job management is now efficient, with clear workflows and always up-to-date information. Errors have been reduced significantly, and the accuracy of the process is now 10x better than before.
